Advances:  Week of November 11, 2018

By NSF Staff

TALLAHASSEE --- After the unthinkable happened in February at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Robert Runcie, Scott Israel and Scot Peterson drew national scrutiny.

Runcie is the superintendent of the Broward County school system, which includes Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Israel is the Broward County sheriff. And Peterson was a school-resource officer who was on duty when a gunman killed 17 people, including 14 students.

In the nearly nine months since the Feb. 14 massacre, the nagging question remains: What could the school system, law enforcement and the broader community done differently to prevent the shooter from destroying the lives of so many people?

A state commission, known as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, has looked at numerous issues, ranging from how 911 calls are handled to the background of alleged shooter Nikolas Cruz, a former Marjory Stoneman Douglas student.

The commission will gather again for four days during the coming week in Broward County. And as part of that meeting, members are scheduled to hear testimony from Runcie, Israel and possibly Peterson as they continue working to find answers.
