The Week Ahead in Florida Politics – September 5, 2016

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, SEPTEMBER 2, 2016…. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump are slated to return to Florida during the coming week, as they try to bolster support in the critical swing state. Clinton will appear Tuesday in Tampa, while Trump is expected to rally voters Friday in Pensacola.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2016

RECOUNT RESULTS DUE: Election canvassing boards face a 3 p.m. Sunday deadline to submit results of machine recounts in state Senate District 19 and in the race for a Northeast Florida judgeship. One recount was ordered in Tuesday's Democratic primary in Senate District 19, where Rep. Darryl Rouson of St. Petersburg held a 76-vote lead over Rep. Ed Narain of Tampa. The other recount was ordered in the race for a judgeship in the 4th Judicial Circuit, which includes Duval, Nassau and Clay counties. Circuit Judge Mark Hulsey led challenger Gerald Wilkerson by 760 votes.

UNF TRUSTEES HOLD RETREAT: The University of North Florida Board of Trustees is slated to hold a retreat. (Tuesday, 8 a.m., University of North Florida, Student Union, Jacksonville.)

FGCU PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH DISCUSSED: Florida Gulf Coast University's Presidential Search Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet, as the university looks to replace retiring President Wilson Bradshaw. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., Florida Gulf Coast University, Cohen Center, 10501 FGCU Blvd. South, Fort Myers.)

UWF PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH AT ISSUE: The University of West Florida's Presidential Search Committee will meet and choose candidates for on-campus interviews. The new president will replace Judy Bense, who is retiring from the post. (Tuesday, 9 a.m. Central time, UWF Alumni Room, Building 12, 11000 University Parkway, Pensacola.)

BEAN SPEAKS AT ENERGY PLANT: State Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, is slated to speak at commissioning event for the Eight Flags Energy Plant. (Tuesday, 3:45 p.m., 22 Gum St., Fernandina Beach.)

CLINTON TO APPEAR IN TAMPA: Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is expected to make a campaign appearance in Tampa. Her campaign had not released full details as of Friday.

JEFFERSON COUNTY SCHOOLS AT ISSUE: The Financial Emergency Board for the School District of Jefferson County is scheduled to meet to discuss information about the North Florida district's finances. (Wednesday, 1 p.m., Turlington Building, 325 West Gaines St., Tallahassee.)

FLORIDA POLY BOARD MEETS: The Florida Polytechnic University Board of Trustees will meet, followed by a public hearing on a campus master plan. (Wednesday, board meeting starts at 4 p.m., Florida Polytechnic University, Admissions Center, 4700 Research Way, Lakeland.)

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2016

FWC DISCUSSES BUDGET REQUESTS: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will start a two-day meeting in St. Johns County. The commission will take up a series of fishing-related issues, along with legislative budget requests for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. (Thursday, 8:30 a.m., World Golf Village Renaissance Resort, 500 South Legacy Trail, St. Augustine.)

LAND CONSERVATION PROGRAM AT ISSUE: The Florida Forest Service will host a meeting about the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program, which helps conserve land. (Thursday, 8:30 a.m., Polk County Commission, 330 West Church St., Bartow.)

CANVASSING COMMISSION MEETS: The state Elections Canvassing Commission will certify the results of the primary elections. (Thursday, 9 a.m., Cabinet meeting room, the Capitol.)

SUPREME COURT RELEASES OPINIONS: The Florida Supreme Court is expected to release its weekly opinions. (Thursday, 11 a.m.)

ECONOMIC ISSUES AND CAMPAIGNS DISCUSSED: Marilyn Geewax, senior business editor of National Public Radio, will speak to the Economic Club of Florida about the topic, "How Economic Issues Have Changed on the Campaign Trail Since 2012." (Thursday, noon, FSU Alumni Center, 1030 West Tennessee St., Tallahassee.)

NORTHWEST FLORIDA WATER BOARD MEETS: The Northwest Florida Water Management District Board of Governors will meet after holding a Lands Committee meeting. (Thursday, committee meeting at 3 p.m., followed by full board meeting, district headquarters, 81 Water Management Dr., Havana.)

ETHICS ISSUES ON THE TABLE: The Florida Commission on Ethics will meet. (Friday, 8:30 a.m., 1st District Court of Appeal, 2000 Drayton Dr., Tallahassee.)

VENOMOUS REPTILES AT ISSUE: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will take up a series of issues, including a draft rule related to captive venomous reptiles. The proposal is aimed at addressing public-safety and ecological concerns. (Friday, 8:30 a.m., World Golf Village Renaissance Resort, 500 South Legacy Trail, St. Augustine.)

BRANDES SPEAKS TO GOP WOMEN: State Sen. Jeff Brandes, R- St. Petersburg, is slated to speak to the Belleair Republican Women's Club. (Friday, 11:30 a.m., 1 Country Club Lane, Belleair.)

LEON HOUSE CANDIDATES AT TIGER BAY: Candidates in Leon County's state House District 9 are expected to appear at the Capital Tiger Bay Club. Former state Rep. GRAHAM SPEAKS TO PASCO DEMOCRATS: Congresswoman Gwen Graham, who is widely expected to run for governor in 2018, will speak at the Pasco County Democratic Party's “Breaking the Ultimate Glass Ceiling” dinner.
