The Week Ahead in Florida Politics – November 21, 2016

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, NOVEMBER 18, 2016....... Florida lawmakers will return to Tallahassee for an organization session Tuesday that will include swearing in 20 new senators and 46 new House members. Also, Stuart Republican Joe Negron will formally take over as Senate president, while Land O' Lakes Republican Richard Corcoran will begin a two-year stint as House speaker. The rest of the week will be quiet in state government because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2016

GAMBLING MONEY ANALYZED: The Revenue Estimating Conference will analyze issues related to slot machines. (Monday, 9 a.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

GRIMSLEY HOLDS 'MOBILE' OFFICE HOURS: Staff members for state Sen. Denise Grimsley, R-Sebring, will hold "mobile" office hours in Okeechobee County. (Monday, 10 a.m., Okeechobee Chamber of Commerce, 55 South Parrott Ave., Okeechobee.)

SENATE RENOVATIONS UNVEILED: The Florida Senate will hold a ceremony to mark the completion of a multimillion-dollar renovation of the Senate chamber. Former President Andy Gardiner, whose Senate term ended with the Nov. 8 elections, will host the event. (Monday, 3 p.m., Senate chamber, the Capitol.)

HOUSE REPUBLICANS GATHER: The House Republican Caucus will meet in advance of an organization session Tuesday. (Monday, 4 p.m., House chamber, the Capitol.)

SENATE DEMOCRATS MEET: The Senate Democratic Caucus will meet to elect its officers for the next two years. (Monday, 5:30 p.m., Senate chamber, the Capitol.)

HOUSE DEMOCRATS CAUCUS: The House Democratic Caucus will meet. (Monday, 6 p.m., House chamber, the Capitol.)

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2016

ELECTION RESULTS CERTIFIED: The state Elections Canvassing Commission will meet to certify the results of the Nov. 8 elections. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., Cabinet meeting room, the Capitol.)

UF TRUSTEES HOLD MEETING: The University of Florida Board of Trustees' Committee on Finance and Facilities is scheduled to meet. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., University of Florida 1 Tigert Hall, Gainesville.)

LAWMAKERS HOLD ORGANIZATION SESSION: The Florida Senate and House will hold an organization session, with members being sworn in, Stuart Republican Joe Negron formally taking over as Senate president and Land O' Lakes Republican Richard Corcoran formally taking over as House speaker. (Tuesday, 10 a.m., Senate chamber, the Capitol. Also, 11 a.m., House chamber, the Capitol.)

NEGRON MEETS WITH REPORTERS: Senate President Joe Negron, R-Stuart, will hold a media availability. (Tuesday, 2 p.m., Senate president's conference room, fourth floor, the Capitol.)

ABORTION CLINIC REPORTS AT ISSUE: The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration is scheduled to hold a hearing on a proposed rule related to reports filed by abortion clinics. (Wednesday, 8:30 a.m., Agency for Health Care Administration, 2727 Mahan Dr., Tallahassee.)

SUPREME COURT RELEASES OPINIONS: The Florida Supreme Court is scheduled to release its regular weekly opinions. (Wednesday, 11 a.m.)

APPEALS COURT RELEASES OPINIONS: The 3rd District Court of Appeal, which hears cases from Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, is expected to release opinions.
