The Week Ahead in Florida Politics – June 13, 2016

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, JUNE 10, 2016…. With the steamy summer months just starting, Florida policymakers are trying to find ways to prevent the spread of the mosquito-borne Zika virus. The state's congressional delegation will get briefed on the issue during the coming week, as will the Broward County legislative delegation.

MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016

BEAN DISCUSSES SESSION: Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, is expected to discuss the 2016 legislative session during a Beaches Business Association luncheon. (Monday, noon, Jacksonville Beach Golf Club, 605 Penman Road South, Jacksonville Beach.)

ST. JOHNS WATER BOARD DISCUSSES BUDGET: The St. Johns River Water Management District Governing Board is scheduled to hold a workshop and discuss issues such as development of a tentative 2016-2017 budget. (Monday, 2 p.m., district headquarters, 4049 Reid St., Palatka.)

GALVANO GETS TOGETHER WITH YOUNG REPUBLICANS: Senate Majority Leader Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, is expected to take part in a meet-and-greet event with the Tampa Bay Young Republicans. (Monday, 5 p.m., Coppertail Brewing Co., 2601 East Second Ave., Tampa.)

WILCOX CAMPAIGNS IN LEE COUNTY: U.S. Senate candidate Todd Wilcox is slated to speak to Lee Republican Women Federated. (Monday, 5:15 p.m., Pinchers, The Marina at Edison Ford, 2360 West First St., Fort Myers.)

REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES DEBATE IN CD 18: The Palm Beach Republican Club will host a debate for GOP candidates in Congressional District 18. Expected to participate are candidates Carl Domino, Rick Kozell, Mark Freeman, Brian Mast and Rebecca Negron. (Monday, 6:15 p.m., Abacoa Country Club, 105 Barbados Dr., Jupiter.)

SENATE HOPEFUL SPEAKS TO POLK DEMOCRATS: Democrat Debra Wright, who is running this year against state Sen. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, is expected to speak during a meeting of the Polk County Democratic Executive Committee. (Monday, 6:30 p.m., Polk County Commission building, 330 West Church St., Bartow.)

WATER CLAIMS GET AIRING: State Insurance Consumer Advocate Sha'Ron James will host a public forum about increases in water-loss claims, particularly in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISCUSSED: The Florida Department of Health will hold a webinar to discuss implementation of a 2014 law that allows patients with certain conditions to receive non-euphoric medical marijuana. FLORIDA BAR STARTS ANNUAL CONVENTION: The Florida Bar will start its annual convention, which will continue until Saturday. The convention will include swearing in Tampa attorney William J. Schifino, Jr. as president of The Bar. RUBIO LOOKS AT DRUG AND MIGRANT INTERDICTION: U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., will lead a hearing titled "Assessing the Coast Guard's Increasing Duties: A Focus on Drug and Migrant Interdiction." U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Paul Zukunft is expected to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, which Rubio chairs.
