THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, JULY 8, 2016…. With the Aug. 30 primary elections fast approaching, legislative and congressional candidates are appearing at forums and fund-raising events across the state. During the coming week, candidates will have to file updated reports showing how much cash they have collected.

MONDAY, JULY 11, 2016

DETZNER SPEAKS AT SHERIFFS CONFERENCE: The Florida Sheriffs Association will hold its annual summer conference. Speakers are expected to include Secretary of State Ken Detzner, who will address security preparedness for the 2016 elections. (Monday, events start at 7:30 a.m., Detzner scheduled to speak at 11 a.m., Hyatt Regency Orlando, 9801 International Dr., Orlando.)

TRAUMA ISSUES ON THE TABLE: The Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Emergency Medical Oversight will hold a workshop that will include discussion of issues such as the allocation of trauma centers. (Monday, 9 a.m., Orange County Health Department, 6101 Lake Ellenor Dr., Orlando.)

CD 19 CANDIDATES APPEAR AT GOP FORUM: Congressional District 19 candidates Dan Bongino, Chauncey Goss and Francis Rooney are expected to take part in a forum held by Lee Republican Women Federated. (Monday, 11:15 a.m., Pinchers, The Marina at Edison Ford, 2360 West First St., Fort Myers.)

NATIONAL ECONOMY ANALYZED: The Economic Estimating Conference is slated to discuss the national economy. (Monday, 1:30 p.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

NORTH FLORIDA WATER SUPPLY DISCUSSED: The St. Johns River Water Management District Governing Board will hold a workshop and discuss a North Florida regional water supply plan. (Monday, 3 p.m., district headquarters, 4049 Reid St., Palatka.)

DENA GRAYSON CAMPAIGNS IN POLK COUNTY: Congressional District 9 candidate Dena Grayson is expected to speak to the Polk County Democratic Executive Committee. (Monday, 6:15 p.m., Polk County Commission building, 330 West Church St., Bartow.)

TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2016

PUTNAM ADDRESSES SHERIFFS: The Florida Sheriffs Association will continue its annual conference, with speakers expected to include Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. The association also will hold an evening banquet. (Tuesday, events start at 7:30 a.m., Putnam scheduled to speak at noon, Hyatt Regency Orlando, 9801 International Dr., Orlando.)

KOSHER FOOD IN PRISONS AT ISSUE: The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments in a long-running battle about offering kosher food to religiously observant inmates in Florida prisons. The U.S. Department of Justice has sought to force the Florida Department of Corrections to offer kosher food. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., Federal Justice Building, 99 N.E. Fourth St., Miami.)

SUWANNEE WATER BOARD MEETS: The Suwannee River Water Management District Governing Board will meet and consider issues such as a 2016-2017 tentative budget. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., district headquarters, 9225 County Road 49, Live Oak.)

ST. JOHNS WATER BOARD DISCUSSES BUDGET: The St. Johns River Water Management District Governing Board will meet after holding committee meetings. The board is expected to discuss issues such as a 2016-2017 tentative budget. (Tuesday, committee meetings start at 9 a.m., followed by full board, district headquarters, 4049 Reid St., Palatka.)

PAROLE ISSUES DISCUSSED: The Florida Commission on Offender Review is slated to discuss numerous parole cases related to crimes committed in the 1970s and 1980s. (Wednesday, 9 a.m., 4070 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee.)

FINANCIAL AID AT ISSUE: The Education Estimating Conference is slated to discuss issues involving student financial aid. (Wednesday, 11 a.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

RUBIO HOLDS ZIKA HEARING: U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., will hold a hearing titled "Zika in the Western Hemisphere: Risks and Response," with witnesses expected to include Tom Frieden, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rubio will hold the hearing as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women's Issues. SOUTH FLORIDA WATER BOARD MEETS: The South Florida Water Management District Governing Board will meet. (Thursday, 9 a.m., district headquarters, 3301 Gun Club Road, West Palm Beach.)

NORTHWEST FLORIDA WATER BOARD TO MEET: The Northwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board will meet after holding committee meetings earlier in the day. (Thursday, committee meetings start at 11:15 a.m., full board at 1 p.m., district headquarters, 81 Water Management Dr., Havana.)

BEAN TO DISCUSS SESSION: Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, will speak to members of the Society for Human Resource Management about the 2016 legislative session. (Thursday, noon, Maggiano's Little Italy, 10367 Midtown Parkway, Jacksonville.)

DRUG PRESCRIBING AT ISSUE: A Florida Board of Nursing committee will discuss recommendations for a formulary of controlled substances that advanced registered nurse practitioners would not be able to prescribe or only would be able to prescribe for specific uses or in limited amounts. (Thursday, 2 p.m., Florida Hospital Association, 307 Park Lake Circle, Orlando.)

ORLANDO HOUSE CANDIDATE RAISES MONEY: A fundraising reception will be held for Democrat Carlos Guillermo Smith, who is running in Orange County's House District 49. (Thursday, 6 p.m., 811 North Orange Ave., Orlando.)

ATHLETIC TRAINING ISSUES ON THE TABLE: The Board of Athletic Training will meet. (Friday, 9 a.m., Embassy Suites Orlando Lake Buena Vista South, 4955 Kyngs Heath Road, Kissimmee.)

LEGISLATIVE CANDIDATES APPEAR AT TIGER BAY: Candidates in the Tampa Bay area's Senate District 19 and House District 70 will take part in a forum at the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club. (Friday, noon, St. Petersburg Yacht Club, 11 Central Ave., St. Petersburg.)

INTEREST RATES DISCUSSED: The Economic Estimating Conference will discuss interest rates used in such things as state appropriations. (Friday, 1:30 p.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

FINANCE REPORTS DUE: State political candidates and committees face a Friday deadline for filing reports showing campaign-finance activities through July 8.
