The Week Ahead in Florida Politics - December 22, 2014


THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, DECEMBER 19, 2014…..After years of steady growth, Florida could be on the verge of overtaking New York as the nation's third most-populous state. The U.S. Census Bureau is expected Tuesday to release updated state population figures. Meanwhile, it will be one of quietest weeks of the year in state government and politics, as the Capitol shuts down Thursday and Friday for the Christmas holiday.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2014

DISPLAYS GO UP AT THE CAPITOL: Continuing a debate about holiday displays in the state Capitol, the Satanic Temple has been approved to put up a display Monday that includes the phrase "Happy holidays from the Satanic Temple" atop a diorama of an angel falling into hell. Meanwhile, the International House of Prayer Tallahassee has been approved to put up a nativity scene.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2014

POPULATION ESTIMATES RELEASED: The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to release updated state population estimates. Florida could surpass New York to become the third most-populous state.

UNEMPLOYMENT CASES DISCUSSED: The Reemployment Assistance Appeals Commission will take up cases. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., 101 Ryne Building, 2740 Centerview Dr., Tallahassee.)

CASH ASSISTANCE AT ISSUE: The Florida Department of Children and Families is scheduled to hold a hearing about a proposed rule dealing with the Temporary Cash Assistance Program. The proposal, in part, would explain how the program determines temporary absences from the state. (Tuesday, 10 a.m., 1317 Winewood Blvd., Building 3, Tallahassee.)

APPEALS COURT OPINIONS RELEASED: The 3rd District Court of Appeal, which hears cases from Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, is expected to release its weekly opinions.
