The Week Ahead in Florida Politics – August 1, 2016

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, JULY 29, 2016…. Attention, shoppers. School is about to start. And in Florida, that means it is time for a sales-tax "holiday." The state will hold a three-day tax holiday starting next Friday, allowing shoppers to buy clothes and school supplies without paying sales taxes. Also during the coming week, Monday is the deadline for Floridians to register to vote in the Aug. 30 primary elections.

MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 2016

KIDCARE ON THE TABLE: The Social Services Estimating Conference will discuss expenditures in the KidCare subsidized health-insurance program. (Monday, 9 a.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

VOTING RIGHTS SOUGHT: Groups of community and religious leaders in Leon and Palm Beach counties will hold news conferences to call for restoring the voting rights of people who have been convicted of felonies and have fulfilled their sentences. (Monday, 11 a.m., Leon County Supervisor of Elections, 315 South Calhoun St., Tallahassee. Also, 11 a.m., Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections, 240 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach.)

PROPERTY TAXES ANALYZED: The Revenue Estimating Conference will discuss ad valorem, or property, taxes. (Monday, 1:30 p.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Floridians face a Monday deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 30 primary elections.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2016

VETERANS' AFFAIRS CHIEF CONSIDERED: Gov. Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet will take up a series of issues, including the appointment of a new executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs. Interim Executive Director Glenn Sutphin will be interviewed for the job. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., Cabinet meeting room, the Capitol.)

COLLEGE ENROLLMENT DISCUSSED: The Education Estimating Conference will analyze enrollment in the Florida College System. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

BEAN TALKS ABOUT CHILDREN'S ISSUES: State Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, will participate in the Jacksonville Kids Coalition's 2016 Candidate Connection. (Tuesday, 1:30 p.m., Jessie Ball duPont Center, 40 East Adams St., Jacksonville.)

PATTERSON RAISES MONEY IN SD 23: A fundraising reception will be held for Republican Nora Patterson, who is running in state Senate District 23. (Tuesday, 5 p.m., 852 Freeling Dr., Sarasota.)

TAMPA BAY TRANSPORTATION DISCUSSED: Senate Transportation Chairman Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, is expected to be among the speakers during a Pinellas County Young Republicans forum on transportation in the Tampa Bay area. DOZIER SCHOOL AT ISSUE: The Dozier Task Force will hold an organizational meeting. Lawmakers created the task force to work on issues related to the Dozier School for Boys, a shuttered reform school that has been at the center of allegations about abuse and deaths of youths. (Wednesday, 9 a.m. Central time, Marianna City Hall, 2898 Green St., Marianna.)

IMMIGRATION REFORM SOUGHT: State Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah, and former House members JC Planas and Juan Zapata are expected to be among the participants in an event to launch the "Reason for Reform" campaign, which seeks immigration reform. TOLEDO RAISES MONEY IN HD 60: Tampa Republican Jackie Toledo, who is running in state House District 60, is expected to raise money during an event in Hillsborough County. (Wednesday, 5:30 p.m., TPepin's Hospitality Centre, 4121 North 50th St., Tampa.)

FLAGLER GOP HOSTS CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES: Candidates in Congressional District 6 are expected to appear at a meeting of the Flagler County Republican Club. SALES-TAX HOLIDAY STARTS: A three-day sales tax "holiday" will start as families do back-to-school shopping. During the holiday, shoppers will be able to avoid paying sales taxes on clothing that costs $60 or less and school supplies that cost $15 or less. (Friday, holiday starts at 12:01 a.m.)

BOARD OF NURSING MEETS: The Florida Board of Nursing will continue a meeting in Orlando. (Friday, 8:30 a.m., Rosen Centre Hotel, 9840 International Dr., Orlando.)
