Sayfie Review Roundup - June 13, 2015

Florida's top headlines that attracted the most
readers on Sayfie Review this week

Marc Caputo and Alex Isenstadt - Politico - June 9, 2015

...She is the Jeb Whisperer, the power behind the throne.

Though Jeb Bush's campaign for president had a shakeup before it even officially became a campaign, one aspect of Jeb World remains as clear as ever: Sally Bradshaw is running the show. To the extent there was a shakeup of Bush's political team this week, it's Bradshaw who did the shaking, the shot-calling and the tough decision-making.

With a gentle drawl and a penchant for perfection, Bradshaw's warm demeanor masks a steely and ruthless efficiency. It was Bradshaw who ultimately made the call to install a relatively young political operative, Danny Diaz, as campaign manager, instead of the more seasoned David Kochel, who was widely expected to get the job.

John Kennedy - Palm Beach Post - June 8, 2015

...Legislative budget negotiations broke off bitterly Monday when the House surprised senators with a sudden move to steer $39 million to Gov. Rick Scott's business recruiting agency.

Just moments after Enterprise Florida officials held a teleconference complaining about a lack of needed funding, House budget-writers said they would up their offer for agency dollars to $39 million from $25 million.

While still far short of the $85 million the public-private agency sought, the decision sparked outrage from Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, who oversees his side's budget work in transportation and economic development.

"Frankly, to get sideswiped like this...is not to me a good level of respect," Latvala said.

In Florida, Republicans Are Americans for Prosperity's Top Target

Scott Bland - National Journal - June 7, 2015

...Nowhere is AFP's fight with Republicans more intense right now than in Florida, where the politicians they are targeting are largely Republicans.

Chris Hudson, AFP's Florida state director, is not shy about touting his group's influence. Lawmakers "see people in their offices wearing buttons with little green torches, and they think, 'I'm about to find out what my 2015 legislative agenda is,'" Hudson boasts.

Tallahassee is packed with powerful lobbyists and legislators who might disagree, but AFP still argues its efforts are bearing fruit. The push for Medicaid expansion has gotten less likely as time has gone on, with Republican Gov. Rick Scott issuing veto threats and some initial business support fading.
