Canova could seek rematch against Wasserman Schultz

After losing an Aug. 30 primary that drew national attention, Broward County Democrat Tim Canova has taken an initial step toward again challenging U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., in 2018. Canova on Thursday filed what is known as a "statement of candidacy" to run in two years in South Florida's Congressional District 23, according to the Federal Election Commission website. This year's primary drew national attention, at least in part, because Canova had the backing of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, while Wasserman Schultz was backed by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Wasserman Schultz, who resigned as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee this summer amid an email furor that included questions about whether she had improperly tried to help Clinton defeat Sanders in the presidential primaries, handily beat Canova in the Aug. 30 congressional contest. Wasserman Schultz won 56.8 percent of the vote, while Canova received 43.2 percent, according to the state Division of Elections.
