Brevard Democrat to run for open Senate seat

Palm Bay Democrat Christopher Duncan opened a campaign account this week to join three Republicans in pursuing a redrawn Senate seat in Brevard and Indian River counties, according to the state Division of Elections website. Duncan plans to run in Senate District 17, which does not include an incumbent. Other candidates in the race are state Rep. Debbie Mayfield, R-Vero Beach, state Rep. Ritch Workman, R-Melbourne, and Melbourne Republican Michael Thomas. Also this week, St. Petersburg Democrat Ben Diamond opened an account to try to succeed outgoing Rep. Dwight Dudley, D-St. Petersburg, in Pinellas County's House District 68. St. Petersburg Republican Joseph "JB" Bensmihen has also opened an account for the race.
