Advances:  Week of December 23, 2018

NSF Staff

TALLAHASSEE --- The Capitol and the state office buildings scattered across Tallahassee will be quiet through the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

But behind the scenes, a massive transition continues.

A formal transfer of power will take place Jan. 8, when Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis succeeds outgoing Gov. Rick Scott and when new Attorney General Ashley Moody and new Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried take office. The statewide officials --- along with Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, who remained in his job after the Nov. 6 election --- will spend the next two weeks continuing to assemble their administrations and develop priorities.

A huge transition also will occur across the street from the Capitol, where longtime Florida Supreme Court justices Barbara Pariente, R. Fred Lewis and Peggy Quince will retire in January. DeSantis has not named replacements, but the Supreme Court is certain to become more conservative after new justices take the bench.

In the meantime, the Supreme Court will continue issuing opinions, as Pariente, Lewis and Quince put their final imprints on the high court’s work.
