House candidates put big money into campaigns

Eyeing an open state House seat, Naples Republican Nick Ballo loaned $81,450 to his campaign between Aug. 13 and Thursday, bringing to $124,250 the total amount he has put into the race, according to a newly filed finance report. Ballo is running in Tuesday's primary in House District 106 against Naples Republicans Lavigne Kirkpatrick and Bob Rommel. They are seeking to replace Rep. Kathleen Passidomo, a Naples Republican running for the Senate. Other state House candidates also pumped money into their campaigns during the closing weeks of the primaries. For example, Lakewood Ranch Republican Steve Vernon loaned $29,000 to his campaign from Aug. 13 through Thursday, bringing his overall loan total to $122,000, according to reports posted on the state Division of Elections website. Vernon is running in Tuesday's primary in House District 73 against Sarasota Republican Joe Gruters. They are seeking to replace Rep. Greg Steube, a Sarasota Republican running for the Senate. Meanwhile, across the state, Boca Raton Democrat Emily Slosberg loaned another $18,000 to her campaign in House District 91. That brought the total of Slosberg's loans to $183,000 as she competes in a primary against former Rep. Kelly Skidmore, D-Boca Raton. They are running to replace Slosberg's father, Rep. Irv Slosberg, a Boca Raton Democrat running for the Senate. Also in Palm Beach County, West Palm Beach Democrat David Silvers loaned $30,000 to his campaign in House District 87 during the recent period. That brought Silvers' loan total to $130,000. He is competing in the primary with Palm Springs Democrat Darren Ayoub and West Palm Beach Democrat Virginia Savietto for a seat being vacated by Rep. Dave Kerner, D-Lake Worth.
