BACK TO SCHOOL A LITTLE EARLIER?

By the News Service of Florida

Four years after lawmakers voted to prevent school districts from eating into summer vacations, a bill by Sen. Bill Montford, D-Tallahassee, would allow officials to push forward the start of school in the fall. Schools are now prevented from commencing classes more that 14 days before Labor Day. The proposal, SB 1468, would allow school administrators to begin classes early enough in August so that all work and assessments for full-term courses in the first semester could be completed by Dec. 20. Numerous attempts to give district officials more flexibility have been made since the law went into effect for the 2007-08 school year.
